Protein Powder??

The question is what do you think of it? Does it help or hinder your weightloss? I've never used it before and I was trying to follow the Clean Eating Magazine 2 week diet plan. In it was a vanilla milkshake with protein powder. I've also read some bloggers use it in their Green Monsters. That being said I bought a container of vanilla protein whey. When I brought it home my husband said that I would gain weight from using it, any truth to this? I just thought I should be getting a little more protein with all the exercise I get.

**Thanks everyone for your imput, I really appreciate it**

I personally am not a fan of protein poweder...have tried MANY different brands/flavours. I honestly can't get over the taste/texture..it's awful. I know that everyone and their dog is in love with Green Monsters...but honestly I'd rather get my protein (in the morning) from a tablespoon of Peanut butter on toast or maybe a one egg plus eggs whites omelete. I know this doesn't help you with your 2 week diet plans that called for a Vanilla shake....
As for gaining weight, I wouldn't be concerned. An average whey based protein powder should have around 120 calories/scoop and you do have to watch the carbs (some brands add too many grams...stick to around 2-3grams/scoop). But you can't deny that at anywhere from 20-30grams of protein/scoop you're gonna be getting a LOT of protein added to your diet. I wish I liked the stuff better...it just tastes soooo bad!

I am a huge fan! I actually credit it to helping me loose weight...I use Optimum Nutrition 100% Whey Protein Powder in Vanilla Ice Cream....I add a scope to my daily fruit smoothie I whip up in the blender. It tastes great, allows me to get in a good amount of protein first thing in the morning, and it doesn't have a ton of calories or fat.

I have been using whey protein powder (for my smoothies) for quite some time, and I love it! No weight gain for me!

I haven't started using protein powder yet, but I've been debating it.

As for weight gain, it's only going to push you over if it's high in calories, or you use too much (still a calorie thing though.)

There are some out there that are designed to help you gain weight and are higher in calories and fat because of it. Perhaps that's what your husband is thinking of?

A lot of people use it and love it, but I've never been able to get into the smoothie routine, and I hate the texture in any other form....but I know people have had great luck with it! And I wouldn't worry about the weight gain potential, just make sure you factor the calories/fat into your daily tally...

I used to drink protein shakes after my workouts when I was younger and seriously lifting 5 days a week. I do think there is a benefit to it..
