I was at the local Bulk Barn which has now become my weekly grocery stop. I was looking for some spelt flour for a recipe that I have and at the regular grocery store it was insanely expensive, thus we hit up the Bulk Barn. While browsing I came across Kasha Whole Toasted Buckwheat. I was actually looking for rice cereal but saw this, so I thought....hmmm Kashi...Kasha...I should try it.
So what is it? It is a buckwheat grain triangular shaped seeds from a grasslike herb. Buckwheat is not a member of the wheat family, therefore it is gluten free and high in minerals, potassium and phosphorus. The hulled raw see is known as a 'groat', and the dried, toasted groat is known as kasha.
It can be served by itself as a breakfast cereal (boil 2 parts water to 1 part cereal, 5-10min), or in a combination with other nuts and seeds. It is also used as a substitute for potatoes, rice, side dishes.
I like the texture, its very course. The taste I think would be something acquired, it tastes really organic? I guess. It tastes like a grain. Yesterday I added some maple syrup, which did well. Today I had it with vanilla whole grain rice milk, I don't mind it that way either.
It was really easy to make, something different to try instead of my daily oatmeal and gluten free for anyone looking for a different thing that is gluten free. Here its the nutritional info on it for 1/4 cup (I'm assuming uncooked) cal 140, fat 1 g, sodium 4g, carbohydrate 31g, dietary fibre 3g, protein 5g.
I got a quick run in this morning and now I'm off to colour some Easter eggs, have a great day!
